While some may not feel that stone is an eco-friendly option due to the fact that quarrying and the rest of the excavation process may have a serious negative impact on the environment – if the stone is taken from a well-managed quarry, then it can be an eco-friendly option. Stone also blends well with the natural landscape, and can easily be recycled for other building purposes. Another way to minimize environmental impact is to build with locally-quarried stone as this will involve minimal transport and shipping and thus reduce the carbon footprint involved. Mortared stone walls are also environmentally friendly, particularly if the wall is constructed using reclaimed stone and lime mortar. Lime mortar is produced at lower temperatures than cement which means lime mortar requires less energy, resulting in 20% less CO2 output. Lime putty absorbs CO2 in the curing process. Non-hydraulic lime absorbs nearly its own weight in CO2, hydraulic lime, around 75% and lower plus lime mortar can be re-cycled, unlike cement.
